How to grow big tomatoes

What’s the secret of growing really big tomatoes?

I am sure many people want to grow tomatoes as big as Gordon Graham’s. He grew a huge tomato, it was 7-pounds, 12 ounces and is even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. What’s the secret of growing really big tomatoes? Here are the following tips when you want to grow big tomatoes:

Soil

Soil is very important. It has to be properly prepared. It is not only important for tomatoes but for all plants. Tomato experts have different techniques and different secrets.

Secret #1: dig a foot-deep hole for each and every tomato plant and then fill it halfway with quality organic compost, with manure and last but not least with 10-10-10 granular fertilizer.

Secret #2: open a trench and then put in a 6-inch layer of good compost which consists of leaves, eggshells, manure and other organic matter then you need to cover it with soil and cover it with spading fork.

Sun

Tomato plants need sun so try to find the hottest and sunniest spot in your garden. They need at least 6-8 hours sunlight a day.

Room

Tomato plants need space so don’t put too many plants too close together. 1 to 4 tomato plants serve a family of four that also means that you don’t need too many tomato plants in your garden.

Water

When your tomato plants begin to flower they like to be kept fairly dry but you should always water upon planting. Don’t sprinkle the plants in stead of water them deeply.

Fertilizer

You can use fish emulsion or ’manure tea’ for fertlizing. Try to use fertilizer once in a week.

Large-fruited varieties

Choose large-fruited varieties ie. Big Beef, Big Rainbow, Dinner plate, Giant Belgium or Beefsteak.
